Angelique Strong Marks: Leading with Purpose in Automotive

At WOCAN, we celebrate women of color making an impact in the automotive industry. This Black History Month, we’re highlighting Angelique Strong Marks, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary at Cars Commerce. Her journey is a powerful story of resilience, leadership, and breaking barriers.

A Passion for Automotive, Inspired by Family

Angelique’s love for the industry started with her father, a self-taught auto body repairman. Growing up, she saw firsthand the dedication of the people behind the automotive world.

After law school, she took an opportunity to work with General Motors, Delphi, and American Axle, which set the stage for a successful career. She has since served as Chief Legal Officer for a top Tier One supplier and helped take an EV startup public on NASDAQ. Now, at Cars Commerce, she helps simplify the car buying and selling experience for millions.

"My father’s inspiration and my aspiration are really what we call the American Dream."

Overcoming Challenges as a Black Woman in Automotive

Angelique acknowledges the unique challenges of being a Black woman in the industry but chooses to lead by example rather than proving her worth to others.

"I treat all people fairly and give my all to everything I do. Some may doubt me at first, but they learn I am here because I’ve earned it."

Her confidence, integrity, and work ethic have allowed her to break barriers and lead at the highest levels.

Advice for Women in the Industry

Her message to women, especially women of color, is clear: Know your purpose, prepare, and build relationships.

"Study the industry, join associations, and connect with people. Believe in yourself, set goals, and take the lead in improving the industry. WOCAN started as an idea, and now it’s making an impact!"

Building a Legacy of Inclusion

Angelique hopes to be remembered for solving problems, spreading kindness, and ensuring fairness in the industry.

"I want people to remember that this industry thrives when it includes everyone and takes advantage of no one."

Her story is a testament to the power of hard work, purpose, and perseverance—a true inspiration for the next generation of women in automotive.
